cocochiyo BASE
Mie, Japan / 125-year-old traditional Japanese house / Whole house
A 125-year-old retreat —
where time slows, and the heart unwinds.
CONCEPT
A 125-year-old traditional Japanese house, held in a four-season Japanese garden.
We've gathered everything that means "comfortable" into a single house.
You don't have to rush.
You don't need a long itinerary.
Morning light on the engawa.
The deep hush of the evening — some nights, stars falling crisp and clean from the sky.
Everything quietly good — yours, in full, for the time you're here.
A film in the theater room. A few more pages in the library.
Children, absorbed in their own play, just next door.
A pause, in the middle of an extraordinary trip.
A quiet, ordinary day — found inside the extraordinary.
THE HOUSE
Built in 1901 (Meiji 34) — a house that has held many generations of life.
Though it's a single-storey house, it stands as tall as a two-storey building — all pitched roof, all presence.
The thick beams, the carved ranma transoms, the small marks of past handwork — all of it, kept as it was.
FAMILY & KIDS
When the baby cries, when the kids run —
a house that has heard a family for 125 years takes it all in stride.
Adults and children, each at their own pace.
In the tatami rooms, we use low mattress beds placed directly on the tatami —
no risk of falling, so a baby can sleep beside you, safely, in a row.
In place of a high chair, we use low chairs and a low table with cushions, so younger children can join the meal comfortably.
With 5 bedrooms plus an engawa, kids can roam, and grandparents can rest. Multi-generation trips are very welcome.
A few baby essentials are kept on hand so families with little ones can settle in comfortably.
* Shower stall only (no bathtub). We do not provide a baby crib, high chair, stroller, children's tableware, jungle gym, or steam sterilizer. Please plan accordingly.
SPACES
Spaces to fully enjoy what "comfortable" means.

01
A wide screen against the garden. One film, a long evening.

02
A small study, lit by a green banker's lamp. Best with a slow read.

03
Toys to get lost in, and a small shelf of picture books to read from.

04
Morning light, dusk colors, winter mist. The seasons drift past the windows.

05
Wake slowly to soft light filtered through shoji paper.

06
Hand-picked tools and the quiet traces of someone's craft. Time loosens, the longer you look.

07
A Taisho-era romance, lightly dressed at the heart of the house. Popcorn, wine and coffee — for the long evenings.

08
Twin sinks, a washer and a dryer. Live a little, while you travel.

09
A four-season planting, with sculpted trees and garden stones. Wide enough for badminton — and a barbecue with local Matsusaka beef.
You've never been here,
but it feels like coming home.

★★★★★
A renovated old house in Tsu, Mie. The building has real character, and inside it has been thoughtfully renewed — the shower, washbasin and toilet are all clean and modern. The hosts are a kind, easygoing couple, and welcomed us warmly.
★★★★★
Set among nature — a space where you lose track of time.
★★★★★
The buildings have so much character, and the surrounding rice fields are truly "cocochiyoi" — quietly comforting and nostalgic. Yet the facilities are new and beautifully kept, so it's wonderfully comfortable.
★★★★★
A spacious, immaculately clean stay. The interior is beautifully styled — we had a really comfortable time.
★★★★★
The hosts were so attentive and warm in their pre-arrival communication that we found ourselves looking forward to the stay more and more. Quiet, easy, well-equipped, thoughtful — comfortable beds, generous rooms. We were happy with everything.
★★★★★

(An absolutely beautiful traditional Japanese house. Yosuke, the host, was very kind and attentive.)
